Electronic Voting, por Rebecca Mercuri, Ph.D.
I am adamantly opposed to the use of fully electronic or Internet-based systems for use in anonymous balloting and vote tabulation applications. The reasons for my opposition are manyfold, and are expressed in my writings as well as those of other well-respected computer security experts. At the present time, it is my strong recommendation that all election officials REFRAIN from procuring ANY system that does not provide an indisputable paper ballot. A detailed explanation, along with my recommendation for appropriately configured voting equipment, is provided in the full text of this statement, available *here*.

This development will remain a meaningless publicity stunt until security protocols are developed, and mandated by law, requiring that all software be tested and approved by a government body, and that no untested, un-approved software can be installed. This must include all source code, compilers, libraries, and patches. And it is not enough merely to make the checksums available; it must be illegal to deploy a machine unless all have been verified.

New e-voting study shows it's really easy to steal an election: On Tuesday, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU's law school released the most comprehensive study to date on the state of electronic voting. The extensive report is a painful read for anyone concerned about the future of democracy, because it shows just how brain-dead easy it is to rig an election with three popular electronic voting systems: direct recording electronic (DRE), DRE with voter verified paper trail, and precinct count optical scan.
